Information for Overseas Buyers

A major advantage to buying your horse from Australia is that Australia is disease free, which can mean:

  • lower import costs; and
  • easier quarantine requirements than other countries.

In some instances this means a simple blood test and no quarantine period.

As well as being disease free, the Australian wide open spaces, allows our horses to be raised in a natural, pollution free envirnoment - producing wonderful healthy, sound stock.

Below is an outline of requirements for four countries, with indicative costs provided by International Racehorse Transport (IRT). IRT is the recommended import/export agent used by Black Horse Manor.

Australia to America

There is an excellent IRT service ex Melbourne to Los Angeles that leaves Australia every Sunday. IRT generally consolidate loads every other Sunday. From arrival in Melbourne to ex quarantine (72hrs) in LA the cost is A$10-10,500/head (Approx 6,945.02 USD). Trucking at both ends & registration transfer fees are extra. There is no pre-export quarantine just the need to bloodtest for EIA.

Australia to Japan

Budget A$9,000 (709,264 JPY, 5,224.49 EUR, 6,425.08 USD) per horse in a single space (based on three horse travelling) to touch down Tokyo.

Price excludes: Registration, Road Transport in Australia and extra ordinary vets fees. Flights usually operate every 6 weeks subject to shares.

Quarantine Requirements: All horses need 2 vaccinations 28 days apart for Equine Influenza. Horses must complete 7 days pre export quarantine, during which blood tests are taken for EIA and EVA. All imports to Japan are subject to local import taxes.

Australia to New Zealand

Price excludes: Registration, Road Transport in Australia and extra ordinary vets fees. Flights usually operate weekly. Horses require bloodtesting for EIA and EVA (Colts only). All imports to NZ are subject to GST.

Australia to Europe

Exchange Rate

There are various websites that you can use to calculate up-to-date exchange rates such as this link: www.rba.gov.au

Current PRE stock prices in Australia tend to be lower than in other countries however this trend is slowly starting to change with the influx of imported Spanish mares and stallions to Australia and the introduction of revision.
