We are finally winding down after a hectic first half year and what a great few months! Foaling has finished with a fabulous result, Elli qualified for Dressage of the Stars, all our mares are in foal and we have a couple of new additions to our broodmare band. All we need is rain to make things perfect!

2008/09 BREEDING SEASON

The season has finished with all our mares safely in foal. This means we have 13 foals due this year (not including the paint foals), so this coming season will keep us pretty busy!

This year also saw Elegance return to her owners, in foal. This was a sad moment for us as we desperately wanted to buy this mare but the owners just would not let her go. Elegance is the mother of BHM Godsent and BHM Heaven Sent. Both these youngsters have been retained and will join the BHM Show team. BHM Heaven Sent will eventually join our broodmare band once her show career is complete.

Foals Born Late

The following foals were born early New Year:

BHM Rocky Road
Born: January 09
Sire: Galero XIV
Dam: Springdale Missy
Bay colt owned in partnership with Natalie Blundell

TH Bolero

TH Bolero
Born: 5 January 09
Sire: Galero XIV
Dam: Waverly Pastel
Black and white colt owned by Kerry & Brett Urwin of Sydney. Bolero will remain a colt and compete in dressage. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to see Bolero at the NSW AHAA Championships in December.

New Broodmares

In January this year we were extremely fortunate to obtain two outstanding mares to include in our broodmare band. These two mares are truly the find of the century. Both are 16.3hh jet black ladies with impeccable bloodlines. Grisabella is a registered Hanoverian mare by Grannis II out Freya and was bred by Belcom Stud. Odyssey is a Warmblood type studbook Thoroughbred mare by the American sire, Seattle Slew out of a Mascay mare. These mares are now in foal to Galero and we are expecting some very special foals out of these girls.

2009/10 Breeding Season

Galero XIV will be available only to non-Spanish mares via chilled semen this year. We are now set up to have the vet attend the property to collect so Galero does not need to travel.

FOR SALE

Most of the 2009/10 foals will be for sale and inquiries are welcomed.

The following horses are for sale now:

BHM Black Magic
Sire: Galero XIV
Dam:

Miss Compliance
Chestnut Thoroughbred mare preg. tested in foal to Galero XIV. Due to foal September 2009. Tanya will be taken off the market in July if not sold. This is the perfect opportunity to purchase a Galero baby at a very reasonable price. Tanya is only for sale to make room for young mares we are retaining. $4400 inc GST neg. to right home.

SHOW RESULTS

We decided not to attend the Australian AHAA Nationals in Victoria. With the current economic and drought situation, we could not justify the expenditure to travel with only young horses. Our stud is focused on the ridden aspect of our breed and we will not travel long distances just for led classes. As our show team matures, and more are performing under saddle, then we will travel to compete at these shows.

BHM Black Elegancia

Our aim with Elli was to qualify for the 4yr old Young Horse Dressage of the Stars to be held in Victoria – and qualify she did! Elli became the first PRE in Australia to qualify for this prestige 4 yr old young horse event. Having made the decision not to actually compete at the event, Elli was to be covered by Galero XIV for an early 2010 foal. She ‘retired’ from competition on a winning note in late February, by winning her very first Elementary Dressage test against good open company. Elli was covered a week later but unfortunately did not conceive – she has other ideas! So Elli will be coming back into work in the spring. She will be prepared for the NSW AHAA Championships, the National Capital All Breeds Show and the 5 yr old Dressage of the Stars. I am not sure at this stage if we will try and put her in foal whilst she is competing or wait. I will make this decision later this year. I look forward to Elli returning to work and know Rebecca is keen to have her back.

SHOW TEAM

At this stage our first shows will be the National Capital All Breeds Show and NSW AHAA Championships in November/December. I am not sure of what dressage or other shows we will do. So far my intended show team is as follows:

  • BHM Black Elegancia
  • BHM Godsent
  • BHM Silver Ballerina
  • BHM Silver Diamontina
  • BHM Signature
  • Painted By Chance (Pinto Shows only)

BHM Godsent will be sent to the breakers after the NSW AHAA Championships and then will have a month’s education with Rebecca before being turned out again. Godsent is now owned in partnership with Rebecca.

BHM Black Galliano

Galliano is owned in partnership with Natalie. He is currently turned out with the other youngsters at Tumut and will come home to BHM in November before going to Natalie’s to begin his training. Galliano’s career will eventually focus more towards eventing.

‘Annie’ was sold to Fiona Darling from Illabo, NSW and her name is now Taci. Fiona is a Pat Parelli instructor and has recently returned from training with Pat in America. In March this year, Fiona and Taci attended the Parelli Spectacular at SIEC. On the last day, Taci was used in the show and ridden for the very first time by one of the lead Parelli instructors in front of numerous spectators. Fiona tells us that Taci didn’t put a foot wrong. Taci is Galero’s first derivative out of our paint mare WP Whatabusybody. Taci’s full sister is BHM Benita, a rising 2 yr old currently growing up at Tumut. We look forward to keeping up to date with Fiona and Taci’s progress.

Painted By Chance

Painted by Chance

In 2008 I purchased a cutting bred mare for Col that was in foal to the black and white paint stallion, Holster Special Chance. I was hoping for a filly to breed my coloured dressage horses however it was not to be. Instead, Painted By Chance was born, a stunning loudly marked black and white colt. I have decided to keep ‘Chance Jr’ and will eventually stand him at stud. Although registered with the Paint Association, I am going to dual register ‘Chance Jr’ with the Pinto Association. This will allow me to attend the Pinto Shows with both ‘Chance Jr’ and BHM Signature rather than just one horse. I am not sure what discipline I will focus with ‘Chance Jr’ at this stage - maybe reining, cutting???? Maybe even dressage???? He is one very special boy and has the most superb temperament.

Michael Rodergiuz from La Patrician PRE Stud

Michael purchased BHM Silver Ballerina from us last year. So great is Michael’s love for the breed that he has recently purchased 2 absolutely stunning black PRE mares from Spain. These mares are in foal and both have foals at foot, one a black filly and the other a buckskin colt. He is also importing a bay yearling filly. These mares and foals all have different top grade bloodlines (Carlo Semi, Semi-Indio, Emotion III ) and were purchased from some of Spain’s top studs - Semillons, Zaforteza and Soto Gil.

All these horse will be housed at Heather Davidson’s PRE stud, Gotico Park. Unfortunately we do not have the room at Black Horse Manor to accommodate mares and foals in quarantine. Michael’s purchases are fantastic news for the Spanish horse in Australia. We wish Michael all the best and will continue to support Michael in his new endeavour. At this stage BHM Silver Ballerina will remain with BHM to be shown. I do have my fingers crossed that the next foal out of one of his imported mares is a colt! Just what I need for my Galero daughters!!!!!

Our Riders

Well what a great year for Rebecca Walshe and Natalie Blundell.

Natalie has made the National A Squad for eventing, which means she is on the short list to represent Australia in eventing for the World Games and Olympics.

Rebecca’s wins are too long to list however at her last four events, Rebecca placed:

  • 7th in the 6yr old Young Horses at the Sydney CDI with Stylist
  • 3rd and 4th in the Advance tests at the Sydney CDI with XL Overtime
  • Champion Prix St George, Canberra Classics with XL Overtime
  • Champion Advance, Canberra Classics with Stylist.

I was Rebecca’s strapper/groom at the Sydney CDI and boy did she work me hard!! I had a great time and as usual the event was so professional.

We are so proud of both ladies and feel very privileged to have them as our riders and partners with BHM.

Del Rio QH Stud

Like BHM, Col’s stud finished on a positive note with all his mares testing positive in foal. This means that he will also has quite a few foals due, so I am not sure when we will get time to see each over the breeding/foaling season! Earlier this year Col sent Pep to Berry AI Centre. Pep proved to be very potent indeed, which allowed for the collection of a lot of semen suitable for freezing.

On the Home Front

Jamie is going great at university and has finally obtained her driver’s license. Her time is very much taken up with university and part-time work. My son is still living with us and is just waiting to hear from the AFP as to when he can start.

I have made a decision to start riding seriously again after a 20yr break. Jamie also wants to ride, so to get us both back into the saddle we have introduced ‘Big Ben’ into our household. Ben is a 16.2hh, 23yr old school master who is trained to medium level dressage and competed in eventing. Despite his age, Ben is fabulous to ride and is just what we need to get all our muscles working again and a reasonable seat. Already I have to fight Jamie to get time to ride him! Ben will see his remaining years with us and really does enjoy being ridden.

I will wait until after the AHAA Championships in December to release the next newsletter. In the meantime keep an eye on the Show Results and Foal pages of the website to keep abreast of the goings on at BHM.

Happy Winter!
