Edition Five : January - May 2008

Although the last five months has been extremely busy for us, it has been very rewarding. Between late foaling and serving, then the re-commencement of competition, we have been kept on our toes. Our last show was on 25 May and now all our horses have been turned out for a well earned rest (not to mention us!)
It is hard to believe that our first foals are only 2 months away!
Website
My website has been re-designed by my webmaster, Rebecca Bidstrup. I love it and I hope that everyone enjoys the new format as much as I do. I welcome any feedback and suggestions.
Competitions
We have had a very successful campaign competing BHM Chocolate, BHM Black Elegancia and BHM Godsent and we are so proud of both our horses and riders.
BHM Chocolate

Chocolate competed in led at Bathurst Royal under the guidance of Natalie Blundell. He won his led Spanish colt/stallion class before coming reserve champion to his big sister.
Although Chocolate is going beautifully under saddle we felt it was too soon for him to compete under saddle at a Royal (especially since he is only 2 years old). Directly from Bathurst Royal, Chocolate was taken to a property at Oberon for the winter and turned out into a paddock full of QH colts. Currently he is enjoying his freedom and he just loves the company of the colts. He will return to Natalie Blundell later in the year.

BHM Godsent
This stunning boy had a very successful day at the Morongla All Breeds Foal Show on 25 May – his first show. Godsent won the Other Breeds Foal Led class and was awarded Champion. He just missed out on Supreme. Godsent is only 8 months old and has a fantastic career ahead of him.
Godsent has now been turned out and will return later in the year to prepare for the National Capital All Breeds Show and the 2009 AHAA National.

BHM Black Elegancia
Elli has just excelled this campaign under the guidance of Rebecca Walshe. Elli’s results demonstrate her trainability and excellent conformation and movement. She is a very competitive horse in open company. See the show results on the website for her results.
Elli is now turned out at BHM until late September when she will return to Rebecca to prepare for the Australian Young Horse Dressage of the Stars in 2009.
Late Foals
We normally try to have our foals born early in the season but this year was the exception to the rule, with both Col and I having mares foaling late.

In January, WP What a Busy Body (Diva) gave us a lovely dark brown/black Galero filly with a full white blaze and white sock. This filly, BHM Benita, is a full sister to BHM Anastasia and is just lovely. Benita was born at Forbes due to being in the EI amber zone. She will remain at Forbes until she is old enough to be weaned then return to Black Horse Manor for handling. Unfortunately Diva could not be put back into foal due to EI restrictions, however will go to Col’s stallion, Pepa Duke (Imp), this breeding season.

Oakleigh Annaleise (Annie), a registered black and white tobiano Paint mare produced the most gorgeous black /white colt by Galero. This colt, BHM Signature, is the first recognised Spanish pinto registered in Australia and will be the first registered coloured horse with the AHAA. He is just awesome and has the conformation to be a competitive dressage horse. We are not sure whether to keep him or sell him. If he is sold, it will be to a show home only. At this stage he will be kept a colt as he is showing potential to be a sire. Unfortunately Annie is only on lease and will be returning to her owner when Signature is weaned.
Col’s chestnut and white overo paint mare had a stunning overo filly by his stallion Pepa Duke (Imp). This little girl is so dainty and classy and will definitely be retained. She has lots of spunk and is a great mover. She will sure look pretty in the cutting pen! Her mum will return to Pep this breeding season.

2008 Breeding Season
This year is shaping up to be a full year for us as we already have a number of outside mares booked to Galero plus our own. Only a few more bookings are available to outside mares.
Our first foals are due in August and we just cannot wait. If this years crop is half as good as last years babies, it will be a ripper of a foal crop!
The recent acquisition of two QH mares has given us further reason to look forward to the foaling season as both mares are in foal to the lovely black and white paint stallion – Holster Special Chance. We have our fingers crossed for coloured foals and double crossed for fillies as well! Both these mares will be put into foal to Pep as they both have excellent cutting bloodlines. Hopefully if we are lucky enough to get a black and white filly, I will have another coloured mare to put to Galero.
Spanish Warmblood
Above: BHM Silver Ballerina sold to Michael Rodriguez, NSW
This year will also see us try something new and import Warmblood semen from Germany to use with 2 of our PRE mares. We are importing semen from the current top 2 European stallions: Sandro Hit and Don Schufro. BHM Black Porscha will go to Sandro Hit and Marieta will go to Don Schufro. We are very excited about this cross and of course pray for fillies as these fillies will be retained and crossed back to Galero.
It is our intention to continue to breed the Spanish Warmblood each year and use only the top dressage sires Europe has to offer. We have a very definite breeding vision for this cross and we are extremely excited. This cross will become a major line within the BHM derivative breeding policy.
This extension of our derivative breeding program will not interfere with our PRE breeding policies or quality.
Spanish Revision
We did not present horses at this years Spanish revision as both Chocolate and Porscha are not yet three years old and Elli is competing. They will all be presented at the next revision.
America
As a result of America withdrawing from ANCCE and the Spanish protocol, we are no longer considering America as a source market for purchasing and importing PRE semen or horses. America has formed their own ‘Spanish’ Association called The PRE Mudial, For us to continue to breed PRE horses as recognised by Spain, we cannot do business with the new American association as it is only the equivalent of the AHAA here in Australia. It is such a shame as America does have some beautiful horses. We will keep an eye on what is happening as Mexico, Brazil and Canada may still be an option.
Del Rio Quarter Horse Stud
Pep has finally come home to Black Horse Manor after being stranded in Sydney due to the equine influenza. He will stay at BHM until the commencement of the breeding season when he will return to Tumut. Unfortunately as Pep was stranded in Sydney, Col is not expecting any foals by him this season. Good news it that he has several ladies waiting for him when he goes to Tumut!
On the Home Front
Jamie is half way through her Year 12 and counting down. Talk about stress - we will all be glad when she graduates! Maybe not – we still have the graduation outfit to think about! Also Jamie currently has her ‘L’ plates and I just hope I can keep my nerve until she finally is good enough to sit for her ‘P’ plates.
Bluff, Col’s working dog that Jamie and I adopted, had puppies earlier on in the year and we kept a male called Sparrow. He is just the best puppy and is showing immense potential to work cows. He will eventually go to a professional trainer but in the meantime we are so proud watching him work beside his mum.
Also new to the stables are the kittens Puff and Spider. These little cuties were running wild at Col’s property and were very feral. We caught them and with a bit of love they are now so friendly and part of the BHM stable team.
The next newsletter will be after the commencement of the breeding/foaling season and we look forward to bringing you photos of Galero’s 2008 babies.
We hope that everyone stays safe and warm over winter.
Sabina Callaghan
