Equine Influenza

The recent events resulting from the Equine Influenza outbreak have had a dramatic affect on not only BHM but everyone we know in the horse industry. Our thoughts and hearts go out to all the breeders, owners, studs, trainers, riders and industry workers who are enormously impacted by this disaster. Both Col and I have friends that live in the other zones who are trying desperately to cope.
Here at BHM we are fortunate that the stud proper is in the green zone and thus EI free. However, 5 of our top mares plus 6 of Col’s are in lockdown in the Forbes area, which is in the Amber zone, and are not allowed to come home to foal or be rebred. We have attempted to find places to move the mares as they become due to foal, however because they are located so close to a ‘Red’ zone, most foaling down facilities in ‘permissible’ areas are full or not taking in any horses.

The mares have been vaccinated as they are in the buffer zone but unfortunately, Springdale Missy, lost her foal about a week after the first vaccination. It is not known if the foal died from EI but it certainly died as a result of the EI situation as she foaled early and we could not be present. Since the loss of this foal Natalie Blundell’s property has been declared an Amber zone and on 16 December we were granted a permit to move Missy and Ray to Natalie’s property. This was none to soon as Ray foaled 4 days later – a stunning black colt!

I have closed BHM to natural service until the situation clears, thus having to cancel bookings; however with the introduction of the ‘green zone’ I have been able to provide some chilled semen.
Col’s stud is by far more negatively impacted than us here at BHM. Prior to the outbreak, his stallion, Peppa Duke (Imp) was sent to a trainer in Sydney. ‘Pep’ was schedule to come home early September to commence the breeding season but the shutdown beat us and he is still in Sydney. In early October he contracted the influenza. Although he has recovered fully, we have been told that his chances of returning home to commence his stud duties this season is almost certainly nil. This means that Col has no stallion, thus no mares will be bred, thus no future income.

The bias that is shown towards the racing industry as being the major ‘victims’ of this disaster is not a true reflection of the situation. Our understanding of the current assistance packages is that the majority of funding is being channelled to the racing industry and we congratulate the efforts of Heath Ryan and his team for all their efforts to help rectify this situation. They have our 100% support.
Of course like everyone else we are asking – ‘how did this happen?’ - but after reading the Equine Influenza Inquiry transcripts it is becoming very apparent the quarantine centre and all the associated processes failed us badly. I eagerly await the outcome and recommendations that will be handed down from the Commissioner. It will be interesting to see if the Government will implement any of the recommendations.

Stud in General
We have been very fortunate to have secured sponsorship from ‘Maddons Produce’ for BHM Black Elegancia. Black Horse Manor purchases all our feed from Maddons and has done so since 2002. Maddons Produce is located at Hume in the ACT and is a very well run family business where customer service is very strong. We thank Maddon’s and will continue to use and recommend them.
The fencing project has been going well, with the project about half finished. The new fences look great. The EI situation has slowed us down however we hope to have the job completed by early 2008.

We recently purchased a towing vehicle and upgraded my float to a small 2 horse gooseneck (before the EI outbreak!). We call the gooseneck the ‘Gosling’ because compared to Col’s gooseneck it is definitely a baby! All I have to do now is learn how to tow it!
The recent rains have done wonders for BHM and finally we have grass. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this may mean we will go back to some good rain patterns.
The 2007 Foaling Season
Above: BHM Black Knight
So far we have 6 foals born and 2 still to go (mares at Forbes). Unfortunately Springdale Missy lost her foal about a week after the first EI vaccination. This foal was owned in partnership with Natalie Blundell and we were so looking forward to this foal. We have just been granted a permit to move Springdale Missy and Ray to Natalie’s pace at Harden. None too soon either as Ray foaled 4 days later! We will AI Missy back to Galero in the New Year.
Once again we are absolutely thrilled with Galero’s babies and just pray that this influenza spares the remainder of our babies.

Horses Sold
Above: Ben Campbell and BHM Chocolate
BHM wishes to congratulate the following people for purchasing the following young horses from us:
Mr Marco Lorenzo and BHM Chocolate
Chocolate was sold to Marco Lorenzo in June. We are very fortunate that Marco has requested Chocolate stay at Black Horse Manor for his show, ridden and breeding career. Chocolate has just recently returned from the breakers and is now in training with Natalie Blundell. At this stage Natalie will be Chocolate’s full time rider. Ben Campbell from Bombala, NSW (green zone) broke Chocolate in and put Chocolate through his paces on the electric cow. It seems that Chocolate has a career as a cutting horse however I soon put a stop to that idea as we are getting him ready for a career in dressage not cutting!!!!! Although I must say that a plus 16hh gorgeous bay Spanish stallion competing at the 2009 National Cutting Horse Futurity would look spectacular and make a great promotion for our breed! We will keep you update on Chocolate’s progress in the next newsletter.
Above: BHM Possum - owned by Angela Keith of NSW
Mrs Angela Keith and BHM Possum
Possum has been sold to Angela and Wayne Keith of NSW. This beautiful bay filly is the first filly by Galero XIV (Imp) born at Black Horse Manor. She is out of our fabulous proven broodmare Caballeriza Marieta who is the dam of BHM Chocolate and BHM Black Elegancia. This is their first P.R.E horse and what a fabulous purchase for them! Angela and Wayne live in Brogo NSW, which is a green zone and where allowed to take Possum home as soon as permits came on line. Possum has settled in beautifully and we will keep you updated on her progress.
Horses for Sale
BHM has the following young horses for sale:

Left: BHM Anastacia | Middle: BHM Black Knight | Right: BHM Black Legend
BHM Anastacia
Yearling bay 1x filly
Annie is a yearling now and is growing beautifully. We were preparing her for the 2007 show season, however due to EI we have scaled down her preparation so as not to sour her. She is entered for Bathurst Royal 2008. This filly has fabulous conformation and will make a great competition horse. $4400 inc GST.
BHM Black Knight
Born 17 September 2007
Jet Black 1x colt
This stunner will be the perfect horse for a small adult or capable child rider looking for a horse that has that ‘wow’ factor. He has true dressage movement and will make a lovely dressage/show Hunter Galloway. His jet black colour just completes the picture. $4400 inc GST until gelded.
BHM Black Legend
Born 30 October 2007
Jet Black 1x colt
It appears this fellow will mature well in excess of 16hh. He has a white star and one white sock, which compliment his jet black colour. Legend has the reach of a warmblood and the elevation of the Spanish horse and is a definite dressage or eventing prospect. BHM Black Legend has been vaccinated by the DPI as part of the buffer zone vaccination program. $4400 inc GST until gelded.
All horses are wormed and fully vaccinated for Tetanus and Strangles. They have had their feet trimmed regularly. All are registered with the AHAA or ACPRE or both if applicable.
For more information see the ‘For Sale’ page or contact us on 02 62363055.
Recent Purchases
In August we purchased a black purebred Hanoverian mare called Graf Destiny. Her last foal to a warmblood stallion had enormous movement and we are expecting the same from her Galero foal. As Destiny was purchased at the time of the EI shutdown she was transported to the Goulburn Valley equine Centre where we had the opportunity to use Galero’s frozen semen. Destiny gave us a positive test on the first insemination so we were thrilled. Col and I traveled to Shepparton in October to pick up Destiny and our QH mare, Cactus.
Show Season
All the shows that we entered in 2007/early 2008 were cancelled and even though we have entered Bathurst Royal, we are anticipating that this too will be cancelled. It appears that our first major show may not be until November 2008, although Elli and Chocolate may compete in local green zone events in 2008.
The Show Team
BHM Black Elegancia
Elli returned from her spell at the end of July and spent a month at Black Horse Manor undergoing ground work with Col, before going to Rebecca Walshe. Rebecca now has Elli in training as part of her first serious preparation for the Australian Young Horse Dressage of the Stars in 2009. Her sponsor, Maddon’s Produce, Hume ACT will provide her show rug set and saddle blanket as part of their sponsorship package. Each year Elli just gets better and she looks fabulous. She has broken the 16hh mark and is filling out beautifully. Although Elli will be put up for revision in 2008, we do not have plans to breed her until her dressage career is completed.
BHM Red Wine Beggar
China was spelled over winter to allow her to grow; and grow she did! China is going to be my riding horse and I cannot wait to ride her. We have started her under saddle and only doing light work with her. She will go to Ben Campbell’s place in the New Year to have a couple of weeks of ‘cow work’ and mountain riding. China is also entered in Bathurst Royal 2008 and I look forward to do some shows with her when the EI situation is over.
BHM Black Porscha
Porscha has grown into a big lump of a girl. We are planning to send her to Ben Campbell when China comes home and do some light ridden work with her during 2008. As she is not 3 until February 2009 we will not be able to have her approved for breeding at the next revision, which I believe is to be held August/September 2008. Porsha is a tremendous filly with heaps of bone and I look forward to competing her. She too is entered for Bathurst Royal.
BHM Anastacia
See for sale section.
If all goes well, BHM Godsent and BHM Black Knight will make their debut at the National Capital Horse Show, Canberra, in November 2008. BHM Black Knight will be shown until sold however BHM Godsent will be retained as a serious dressage contender. Rebecca Walshe has claimed BHM Godsent and was responsible for his name!
Spanish Revision
The Spanish revision is scheduled for March 2008 however I am of the understanding that due to the EI situation that attempts are in place to postpone the revision until August/September 2008. I hope this is the case as by that time I can present both Ellie and Chocolate for approval for breeding.
I have submitted all my paperwork for ownership cards, service covering certificates and inscription for BHM Silver Ballerina. Passports for BHM Possum and BHM Black Porscha have finally arrived from Spain and will be available from ACPRE sometime in December/January. I understand that my ownership cards have been processed and are part a batch on its way back from Spain.
Del Rio Quarter Horse Stud
Both Col’s properties are looking fantastic. Although there is feed available now, water is still a bit of a concern at Forbes. Col was able to sow a few oat crops however we lost the crop to the rain as we could not get a dry week to cut and bale. Funny how things can turn around so quickly!
We have been helping Col with his long yearlings and this has kept us busy. He has got some fabulous youngsters by his stallion and most of the geldings have been sold. Unlike Spanish horse owners/breeders, Col gelds all his colts. Unfortunately due to the EI, after the initial breaking in period, we have turned his horses out as we cannot send them to the trainers. At this stage the Cutting Horse Futurity may not go ahead in 2008. Even if it does go ahead in late 2008 it will not give Col enough time to have his horses trained sufficiently to be competitive.
In August I purchased a cutting bred QH mare named Cactus Peppy Lenna, in partnership with Col. ‘She is by Poco Peppy Doc (Imp) out of Silk’n Cactus and coincidently is black. She was purchased at the same time I purchase my new warmblood mare, Graf Destiny, from Victoria and both mares where stranded in Victoria. As a result she too went the Goulburn Valley Equine Centre with the intention of using semen from Col’s stallion. This turned out to be impossible due to Pep’s location in the purple zone and just by chance a new young gun import by the name of RS Chisum was also stranded at the centre. RS Chisum is bred in the purple. His sire is HES A PEPTOSPOONFUL and his dam is RS SOLA REY ME. As a result we were fortunate enough to be allowed to use this stallion and Cactus is due early September 2008. We are so thrilled as it appears that RS Chisum is not available to public stud and our foal will be one of the first in the country. Needless to say we will keep this foal and I am not going to let Col geld this fellow too quickly if it is a colt! Cactus is currently at Black Horse Manor and with her colour, blends in well.
Like BHM, this season’s foals are arriving and he has got some beauties! I will put some photos in the next newsletter.
On the Home Front
Well I have finally finished my degree and graduated in November. After many years of hard work and study I can relax. I can now proudly put after my name - BA App. Science. Equine. It was a long haul but worth it and I thoroughly recommend the course. The next course both Col and I are undertaking is an AI Technicians course in Victoria. Both of us are looking forward to this.
Jamie is currently traveling India with a school friend and her family for two months. What an experience for her and already she has phoned to say that she has been white water rafting, riding an elephant and buying lots of things! My son, Matt, is currently on overseas manoeuvres with the Navy and should be home for Christmas. He has been gone for 3 months so it will be very good to see him. I have recovered well after my knee surgery although still hesitant to do some things – how I hate getting old!
I love this time of year and look forward to my break from my ‘real job’ (in the public service) over the Christmas/New Year period. I intend to sleep a lot, enjoy some good food and wine with close friends and family.
2008 is going to be a good year – so keep safe and have a wonderful Christmas and a fabulous New Year.
Merry Christmas
Sabina Callaghan
