The Stud in General
Above: State Secret
There is no doubt that the drought is taking its toll - this is the 6th dry year we have had. We are handfeeding every horse and I am just lucky that I stocked up with feed before the drastic price increases. I am also lucky that we can use our bore for stock, house and drinking water, as all our dams are dry. I must say that the hard times are starting to wear thin and it is really only seeing the babies and watching them grow that keeps me in the industry. Many times I have thought about relocating to somewhere it rains but just when I think I have found the ideal place, they go into drought! So like many other studs we will just stay put for a while and pray that more rain is forthcoming.
A few years ago, Black Horse Manor bred a lovely bay Anglo Arab named State Secret (Chip Chase) who was sold to Donna Tidswell as an endurance prospect. At the National Capital All Breeds Show held on 26 November 2006, Donna approached me to tell me of State Secret's success. "Chip Chase" has grown into a lovely 16.1hh boy who is fiercely competitive and doing extremely well in endurance. He currently is having time off after successfully completing five 80km rides, one 100km, one 120 km and the Tom Quilty, which is 160 km. Donna emailed a photo of him and stated, " ...he deserves a well earned rest and will be bought back into work after Christmas. Then look out Endurance world next year!" Donna has promised to keep me informed of his progress. It is always good to hear how horses we have bred and sold are doing.

Manuka Diestro was our principal stallion from 2001 until 2004. Recently we have been contacted by some of our clients who used Diestro while he was with us. All have expressed how happy they are with is progeny and some are only now coming of an age to be competed. Here are a couple of his babies:
AP Da Diva (Dodi)
Owned and bred by Ambassador Park Warmblood Stud, Qld. Jenna states, "...she is very special to us..." Dodi is out of a warmblood mare and will see her future in the dressage ring.
Valier Park Valero (Buster)
Above: Valier Park Valero
Owned and bred by Angela Woods from Collector, NSW. Buster had his first show at the National Capital All Breeds Show ACT on 26 November 2006 and won Champion Andalusian Led Partbred so you can imagine how happy Angela was.
Angela writes, "Buster was broken in this June and proved to be a very willing and uncomplicated young horse. He was then spelled for 5 months and has just come back into work and is going very well under saddle. He has 3 regular, rhythmically paces and has proved to be a very quick learner. He will commence his dressage career in 2007 under the guidance of Rosalie Walker."
2006 Stud Foals
Above: BHM Anastacia at 12 hrs old
We had 3 foals due this foaling season. Unfortunately Lady Zavata lost her Galero foal sometime after her 45-day pregnancy test. This is the second year in a row that Lady has lost her pregnancy after 45-days (in foal to Diestro). As a result, at age 22yrs, Lady has now been retired. She will spend her twilight years on a property at Tumut. Lady was a fabulous broodmare and will be sadly missed and certainly hard to replace.
The other two Galero babies are as follows:
BHM Anastacia – 'Annie' for short. Bay 1x filly born on 31 October 2006. Annie has a large white blaze and two white hind socks and is just a gorgeous little girl. She is expected to mature approximately 15.2hh. Her mother, WP Whatta Busy Body is QH/TB and Annie has certainly inherited the combined agility and athleticism of the Spanish/QH/TB cross. Annie is for sale for $3300 inc. GST.
Above: BHM Possum
BHM Possum – P.R.E filly. Possum was born on 20 November 2006 about 3 weeks early. She is a beautiful mahogany bay with a large white star. Her dam is Caballeriza Marieta so this makes Possum a half sister to BHM Chocolate and BHM Black Elegancia. Possum is going to be tall and elegant like Elegancia and is just gorgeous. Her lines will make her a very valuable broodmare in the future and she has the genetic make up AaE, which means she can produce black. At this stage, as the only P.R.E filly owned by Black Horse Manor by Galero, Possum will be retained.
2006 Outside Foals
Congratulations to Cheryl Elphick of Southern Cross Pure Spanish Horse Stud on the birth of the first Galero foal, first Galero Purebred foal, and first Galero filly!!!!!!!! Southern Cross Mea - a black Pure Spanish filly (P.R.E) was born in September and although several weeks early, was healthy, strong and gorgeous.

In an email Cheryl writes "I just love this absolutely FAB filly, she is just soooo incredibly beautiful, and has a temperament to die for ...Maybe I'm a bit biased but so far I really cannot fault her. MEA IS the BEST that I have Bred so far, and there have been some really good ones before her."
Our thoughts and prayers go to Victoria Oska of Oska P.R.E Stud Canberra after her mare, Gumnut Farm Santana (Tarni) gave birth to a black Galero P.R.E filly six weeks early. OPS Brindabella was born on 4 December 2006 and although a fighter, did not make it. Brindabella was buried at Black Horse Manor near her father's paddock. Tarni will return to Galero in September 2007.
We will keep you updated on the progress of all Galero babies in future issues of this newsletter.
2006 Breeding Season
Galero XIV (Imp) has covered the following stud owned mares:
Pure Spanish
Kenia-FC (Imp Spain) - foal due August 2007
Caballeriza Marieta - foal due December 2008
Thoroughbreds
Springdale Missy - foal due September 2007 - not for sale
Rayanui - foal due December 2007 - not for sale
Smooth Kiss - foal due December 2007
Quarter Horse
Elegance foal due September 2007
Princess foal due September 2007
Expressions of interest are welcome for the purchase of the above foals.
Both Springdale Missy and Rayanui are owned in partnership with Natalie Blundell. The resulting foals will be raised, handled and prepared by myself, before being handed over to Natalie for backing and then training. We are both hoping that they will follow in their mother's and siblings footsteps and become fabulous performance horses.
Galero also covered several outside mares. At this stage the owners have indicated that they will not be selling their foals.

Above: Gheerulla Mayara
Congratulations to Fiona Burford of Rose Cliff Pure Spanish Horse Stud for being the first Western Australian Stud to use Galero. Fiona covered her lovely Spanish mare Gheerulla Mayara. This foal is due early October and very much anticipated by Fiona and us. Thank you Fiona for choosing Galero!
Galero XIV (Imp)
Boy what a breeding season Galero has had at the time of writing of this newsletter, with 100% of mares positive after one cover - including chilled semen, 60% of mares twinning, and 90% holding a single pregnancy after vet intervention. There is certainly nothing wrong with Galero's fertility and his chilled semen has been commented on by several vets as, "Some of the best quality semen we have handled". Galero still has several mares to cover however we have absolutely no doubt that he will keep the excellent results up!
Having officially been retired, Galero now shares his paddock with his own lovely lady, "Princess", a black QH cross mare that he simply adores. It is lovely to see the two together and Galero is just so contented and happy.
And yes we are so proud of Galero's babies!!!! 5 foals - 5 fillies; 3 black and 2 mahogany bay. They are just as exceptional as we expected and we look forward to watch them grow. We will give regular updates of his babies in future newsletters.
BHM Black Porscha (Imp Spain)

Well Porscha is growing a hundred miles an hour and is developing into a lovely young teenager. Porscha will have her debut at the 2007 Australian Andalusian National Horse Show in March and possibly the Victorian Championships a fortnight later. Porscha is still mainly black with ticking through her coat, which indicates that she will be like her mum, and grey out very slowly. She is quite tall so it looks like she may mature at least 16hh. She has teamed up with BHM Red Wine Beggar, my yearling paint filly.
Shows
Unfortunately the 2006 NSW Andalusian Championship show was cancelled so this left us with only the National Capital All Breeds Show, Canberra to exhibit our Spanish horses. I exhibited both BHM Chocolate and BHM Black Elegancia for a very successful day. Chocolate won the led Andalusian Yearling Class and Ellegancia won Reserve Champion Spanish Mare/Filly. BHM Black Wolf was placed 3rd in the 2-4 yr old Spanish Colt.
This was a very successful show for Manuka Diestro, our foundation stallion, with his progeny placing 1st and 3rd in the Yearling class, 3rd in the 2 yrs - 4yrs Spanish Colt class, the Reserve Champion Spanish Mare and Valier Park Valero winning Champion Partbred. Manuka Diestro’s babies are only now just coming to age as they mature and will definitely feature predominantly in future shows.
We have no more Spanish horse shows now until the 2007 Australian Andalusian Nationals, in March at the Sydney International Horse Complex. I am looking forward to this show and will be exhibiting BHM Black Porscha, BHM Chocolate and BHM Black Elegancia. As the Victorian Championships are to be held 2 weeks later, I have decided to keep the horses in work and attend this show also. After this show all the horses will be turned out for the winter.
Paint Horses
My second love to Spanish Horses has always been paint horses and sometime in the future I want to breed myself a "Spanish Paint". So in 2005 I splashed out and purchased a stunning chestnut mare called "Whatta Busy Body" (Diva) from Audrey Haywood of Audrey Paints NSW, in foal to her awesome Paint stallion, Just a Shameless Beggar (Just Shameless x Beggar Bingo Rose).
About a month after Diva arrived, she gave birth to a lovely loud coloured chestnut overo filly that I named "BHM Red Wine Beggar" - China for short. China is now a yearling and has commenced her halter show career. At her first two shows she was second in the Yearling Futurity Class and Champion Paint Filly/Mare. I am having great fun showing western; I even had to go out and buy myself a new western outfit and hat! I will continue to show China lightly in halter but my main aim for her is under saddle and already Col has her picked out as a cutting prospect. In the future she will go to Galero to try and breed my "Spanish Paint".

Left: BHM Red Wine Beggar (China for short) | Middle: China being shown at her first show in September 06 by Rod Wark (I had not yet bought my western hat!) | Right: China shown by me in October 06 wearing a borrowed hat!
I intend to send Diva back to a paint stallion in 2008 (possibly imported American semen) however for this season (06) she will be going to Col's stallion, Peppa Duka (Imp).
Del Rio Quarter Horse Stud
So far Col has had 8 stud owned foals: 4 colts and 4 fillies. They are all very typy and lovely foals with one or two that are exceptional. One in particular has caught my eye and I have asked Col if I can campaign him as a youngster in hand until he is sold. He is a stunning chestnut boy with a 1/4 moon shape white marking on his forehead. I just love his overall appearance and movement and he certainly has presence. The quality of foals demonstrates that Peppa Duke (Imp) (Duel Pep x Doc Olena mare) is a versatile QH sire that produces not only working horses but horses that are also good enough to halter. If anyone is interested in buying this colt please just drop me a line and I will pass it onto Col.

Left: Eclipse at 3 days old | Right: Eclipse at 1 month old
Col currently has a young filly in training with Graham Amos in preparation for the 3yr old Cutting Futurity. He has another filly waiting in the wings. These fillies are fabulous working horses and it is only a matter of time before Col will know if they are futurity material. Like all disciplines it takes a quality, hard work, dedication, money and just a sprinkle of good luck to produce that special one.
On the home front
Col and I are planning to go to America sometime next year. Currently we are debating about what time of year to go; I want to go April/May when our breeding and show season is over, but Col wants to go in December when all the big cutting horse shows are on. If we do go later in the year then I may try and combine it with SICAB in Spain. I am really excited about going; as we will be looking at QH, Paint and Spanish horses. We are both looking at what is available for AI. If however, the current situation with the drought does not ease, then we may have to postpone the trip until 2008.
On the first weekend of December I attended the AHAA book launch and I am very impressed with the book, "The History of the Spanish Horse in Australia" that the AHAA produced. So if you are pondering on what to purchase as a Christmas present then this book is worth looking at. Not only is it a good read but it also will make a great coffee table book.
Col has converted Jamie to western riding and this is the reason that prompted me to put her Spanish gelding, Ronardo, on the market. He will be missed however he is better suited to dressage and eventing. Congratulations to Megan Vasilescu on buying Ronardo.
Well, Christmas is here again and I just love this time of year!!! So from all of us here at Black Horse Manor we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
The next Newsletter will be out after the Victorian Championships in March 2007.
Sabina and Jamie Callaghan
