Edition Eleven : May 2011 – January 2012

Welcome everyone to 2012!

Where did the last 8 months go! So much has happened and still happening - but it is all very exciting!

The property has several fantastic dams

Relocation of BHM

The current location of BHM in Burra has been sold. The purchasers have requested a delayed settlement so although contracts are exchanged, final settlement is not until 29 February 2012. After looking at numerous properties I have finally exchanged contracts on a 140 acre property at My Fairy, north of Bungendore NSW. Both contracts will be settled simultaneously so I will not actually relocate the stud until March 2012.

The house is small and the property has no infrastructure.
Above: The house is small and the property has no infrastructure.

No one warned me of just how stressful and expensive selling and buying property is! The costs associated with agents, solicitors, inspections, repairs, licenses, stamp duty and so on just keep adding up so that the final figure you end up with is not what you expected. The worry of everything coming together is amazing so I cannot wait for the moment I move in and can breathe a sigh of relief (plus open the bottle of Moet!).

As I work full time in Canberra I had to search for a property no more than one-hour drive east, north or west of Canberra CBD. The area I chose is an up and coming location only 5 minutes from the boutique town of Bungendore and a 45 minute drive to work.

The pasture is mainly native however I will pasture improve once I settle in.
Above: The pasture is mainly native however I will pasture improve once I settle in.

The 'new' BHM has a small home and basic fencing so there is a requirement to build major infrastructure to make the property a working stud. The initial work to be undertaken is the fencing of Galero's paddock and the erection of the new stable complex. I am hoping that whilst we have the equipment to level the stable site, the dressage arena can at least be levelled with a surface added at a later date. The area has good average yearly rainfall and although mainly native pasture at the moment, I intend to undertake a pasture improvement project once I have settled in.

Once the major infrastructure is complete I will hold an open day for all persons wishing to view BHM and our horses. I am planning to run this open day in conjunction with other events still to be arranged. If you are interested in receiving an initiation to the open day please let me know.

The Stud in General

2011 finished with a great spring and plenty of feed to see us into the summer. Even with hot temperatures starting to become more frequent, the evening storms are providing welcome relief and moisture. Although hot temperatures are predicated so is a wetter than normal summer so here is hoping!

The 2011/12 Foaling and Breeding Season

As the focus has been on selling and relocating, I have placed the remainder of my efforts on the 2011/12 foaling and breeding season and what a great season we had. All foals have been born healthy and without incident (although some very late) and my serving is almost completed. We were blessed with the following foals this season:

BHM Perfecto

Galero x BHM Black Porscha - genetically tested bay PRE colt who was sold at birth to Kate Fenner of Kandoo Equine Services. Full brother to BHM Silver Jaguar.

BHM Spanish Amor

Furst Love x BHM Black Elegancia. Jet black Spanish Warmblood colt of exceptional conformation and temperament. Denzel, as he is known, is owned in partnership with Rebecca Walshe and will remain a colt. He is destined to be a dressage superstar and a future sire for Galero daughters.

Furst Love – Spanish Amor’s dad.
Above: Furst Love – Spanish Amor's dad.

BHM Thumberlina

Galero x Montoro Flash. Bay/grey Spanish Warmblood filly owned in partnership with Natalie Blundell. Thumberlina may be tiny as her name indicates but she is extremely athletic and feisty.

BHM Summer Breeze

Galero x Odyssey. Black 1st cross filly that is amazingly athletic and pretty as a picture. For sale.

BHM Black Diamond

Galero x Belcam Grisabella. Black Spanish Warmblood who is pretty, pretty, pretty and can move!!! A lovely girl who will give her older sisters a run for their money! For sale.

BHM Heaven Sake

Galero x Ellegance. Black 1st cross filly that is a full sister to BHM Heaven Sent, Godsent and Angle Sent. I believe that "Prue" is going to be the best one out of all of them so keep an eye out for her. For sale.

BHM Mona Lisa

Galero x San Miranda Valencea. Bay PRE filly who is tall and very true to type. A lovely temperament and great movement completes a perfect picture. She is a full sister to BHM Black Madonna who has been retained as a broodmare. For sale.

The breeding season has been busy for me.

We have the following foals due next year:

PRE

  • Marietta x Galero
  • San Miranda Valencia x Galero
  • BHM Black Porscha x Galero – filly not for sale

Spanish Warmbloods

  • Belcam Grisabella x Galero
  • BHM Black Madonna x Chess-M (Imp) – guaranteed a pinto as Chess-M is homozygous for tobiano. Filly not for sale.
  • BHM Heaven Sent x Bluefields Floreno – filly not for sale

Spanish Derivatives

  • Black Zephyr x Galero
  • Odyssey x Galero

The majority of these foals will be for sale and payment plans will be available for foals at foot until weaning.

Galero

Galero will not longer be advertised as standing at public stud. If people are interested then they can contact me but it will be purely by private treaty. Instead I will concentrate my advertising on selling youngsters rather than 'Stallion at Stud'.

Habanero
Above: Habanero. I really would love a colt by Habanero out of Elli.

BHM Black Elegancia

I imported Habanero semen for Elli however she is such the prima donna that we had no pregnancy first attempt, twins the second try and lost both, and now she is not coming back into season properly!! Getting a pregnancy is hard enough with frozen semen but twins! How frustrating! Hopefully she will start to play the game soon otherwise I will have to wait until next season. I really want a colt out of this cross - so come on Elli – please!

Dominante

Bluefields Floreno
Above: Bluefields Floreno

In my last newsletter I was trying to raise enough interest to import frozen semen from Dominante. Unfortunately we did not have enough Australian breeders interested in using this stallion and Dominante's owners decided it was not financially viable.

Bluefields Floreno (Imp)

BHM Heaven Sent is in foal to Bluefields Floreno. This young Warmblood stallion is the current WA medium dressage Champion and just amazing. If I am happy with the foal by him, I will definitively use him again in my Spanish Warmblood breeding program. I have big expectations for the Heaven Sent and Bluefields Floreno combination. I am hoping for a filly to cross back to BHM Spanish Amor and Galero.

Chess-M (Imp)

Chess-M
Above: Chess-M

I have always loved the black and white horses and have been looking for a black and white filly for many years without success. I have very specific requirements so I have decided to again try and breed one. BHM Black Madonna is a black, 16.1hh PRE filly by Galero who has not been approved for breeding yet. She will be presented this year when the Spanish Revision team comes over in May. However until she is revised I have decided to use her to breed my black and white and pray like anything for a filly! Chess-M is a 16.2hh homozygous black and homozygous tobiano Warmblood stallion who arrived in Australia in December 2011. He is a fabulous mover and has a great temperament. I am guaranteed a black and white foal – I am just not guaranteed of the sex! However regardless of sex, I am expecting a very flash and amazing Spanish Pinto.

Pro-Fit Foal Rugs

It is not often that I will endorse a product however Pro-Fit Foal rugs are now fully recommended by Black Horse Manor. I purchased a full range of sizes that I used this foaling season and was extremely impressed with the fit, wear and ease of these rugs. All BHM foals are rugged and handled extensively for at least the first week after foaling and I just love the way these rugs fit the foals. I have tried several top brand foal rugs but Pro-Fit Foal Rugs are by far the superior product.

For further information go to www.pro-fitrugs.com.au or contact me if you have any questions.

I wish to congratulate the following new members of the BHM team!

Kate Fenner of Kandoo Equine Services. Kate purchased BHM Perfecto and BHM Black Joker. Kate intends to compete both boys so I look forward to seeing them out and about. Perfecto will remain a colt and is the first Galero PRE colt to remain entire in Australia. If he grows as half as good as his brother, BHM Silver Jaguar, then he will be magnificent.

Kate has a blog so that people can watch Joker's progress www.kandooequine.com.au/_blog/Joker

BHM Black Silhouette won Supreme Junior at SA AHAA Championships
Above: BHM Black Silhouette won Supreme Junior at SA AHAA Championships

Karen Griffiths from Gundaroo, NSW purchased BHM Black Lace. Karen and Lace are a fantastic pair and are made for each other. Like Kate, Karen is going to compete Lace so we will see them both at our shows.

Brett and Kerry from Thalaba Horses purchased Grauf Destiny to join their broodmare band. Destiny brings fantastic new bloodlines to their black and white Warmblood breeding program. Destiny produces fabulous foals so I cannot wait to see her first coloured foal.

Horses for Sale

BHM has a number of quality youngsters for sale and we now have available payment plans for selected horses. See the For Sale section for details.

BHM Black Galliano and Natalie shined at the NSW AHAA Open Dressage Day
Above: BHM Black Galliano and Natalie shined at the NSW AHAA Open Dressage Day

Of particular note is BHM Black Magic who is going beautifully under saddle and is only for sale to help fund Natalie's bid to represent Australia in London for the 2012 Olympics. Natalie is now a member of our Eventing Elite Squad and is a definite contender. So if you are looking for a genuine competition prospect you definitely must look at BHM Black Magic. Help get Natalie and Algebra to the Olympics!

Natgelbra

Natgelbra is a combination of Natalie (Blundell) and Algebra, the horse she will be riding at the Olympics if they are both selected. Natgebra is the name of the fund raising campaign that has been formed to raise the much needed funds to get Nat and Algebra to London. Although Algebra is not a Spanish horse, Nat is one of my head riders and owns several in partnership with me. She is a great supporter of the Spanish horse and hopefully in the future will take a Spanish derivative to the Olympics. So if you receive any requests to purchase raffle tickets, attend events and etc. for Natgelbra please give generously. Once the Natgelbra website is up I will let everyone know.

Show Results

I did not show any horses myself in the last 8 months as I just have not had the time to prepare them however BHM Godsent, BHM Black Galliano and BHM Black Silhouette have had amazing results. I am so proud of these horses - just youngsters with many years of competition ahead of them.

For full details and pictures see the Show Results page.

For the second year running BHM Black Jack has won the NSW AHAA Junior High Point score. Congratulations Susie and Jack – what a fantastic pair! Jack has just been broken to saddle and I cannot wait to see him out completing under saddle.

Steve Hart Clinic

Steve Hart Clinic
Above: Getting instructions from Steve before the horses are bought out.

On the 7-8 January I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph and video a clinic held by Steve Hart for the staff at Canberra Equine Hospital. Steve Hart is the well known camp draft and cutting trainer who just happens to live in Burra. Although I did not participate, I still learnt heaps and it was one of the best clinics I have attended. When I hold my open day at BHM I am going to try and organise Steve to put on a mini clinic as part of the open day attractions.

On the Home Front

Amongst buying and selling my property I commenced a new job mid November 2011. As it is a promotion, it comes with additional responsibilities however I am always up for a challenge. I am working with good people, which always helps.

I am very flattered that the Victorian branch of the AHAA has asked me to judge the Purebreds and Hack ring at their State Championship Show in March. I have accepted the appointment and I am very much looking forward to it. It falls at the same time I am supposed to move but what the heck!

Jamie and her flatmate Clair at our Christmas dinner
Above: Jamie and her flatmate Clair at our Christmas dinner

All else is well. Jamie has finally recovered from her glandular fever although now she is sporting a sprained left hand (one too many drinks New Years Eve) – no sympathy for this one.

Matt loves his job and his new girlfriend, Sarah, is just lovely. Maybe I will be a grandmother one day after all!

After 8 years Col and I have decided to go our separate ways. Distance and very busy lives have made a relationship impossible however we will remain friends.

2012 is shaping up to be a big year for me. On top of everything else, I have started riding Diamontina and preparing some youngsters for breaking in. Keep an eye out for BHM Blacks Instyle, BHM Black Geisha and in particular, BHM Silver Jaguar. Jag is a PRE gelding by Galero who looks like he will mature at least 16.3hh if not taller. He is the next horse I have identified that will be professionally trained and campaigned. Although advertised for sale, I am not serious about selling him unless someone offers mega bucks. We need more purebreds out competing and I believe this boy is the one that will turn heads and get people talking.

I will shortly be advertising for a horse person to join the BHM team either as a casual or live in position. So if you know of anyone who may be interested in the position please have them contact me.

All the best for the New Year! I look forward to catching up with everyone at the shows. For those people who do not know me, please introduce yourself to me otherwise how else will I know who you are!
