Boy has the last year flown!

THE STUD IN GENERAL

BHM Black Coco

Well we have gone from drought to flood and now it looks like back to drought!! Fortunately during all the rain we did not sustain an enormous amount of property damage but we do have fences down as well as loosing one of our large foundation trees. I will have to rethink some of the paddock designs to minimize future fencing damage and erosion. I am not complaining about the rain as I was so happy to see paddocks with plenty of feed – finally! What I am disappointed about is that it looks like it has stopped raining and we may be heading back into dry times.

The tragedies in both Christchurch and Japan certainly put everything in perspective making our damage here at BHM seem extremely trivial.

We are certainly in a better position than the people in Queensland and to help out we donated a service to Galero XIV to the Horsezone Flood Relief Auction.

I have now closed down for the winter. Most of the young stock and broodmares have been taken to the farm for winter, leaving only a handful of older stock and weanlings at BHM. The cycle re-commences in August as the mares begin to return for foaling but in the meantime we look forward to a well earned rest.

2010/11 FOALING SEASON

I always love this time of year and again we were rewarded with some fabulous babies. The foals we have had this year are:

BHM Black Galliano

NEW MARES

Dominante
Above: Dominante

Earlier in 2010 I purchase a black studbook thoroughbred mare from Debbie at Double TT Stud. Her name is Zephyrs Destiny and although old bloodlines, she is extremely well breed. Zephyr is a lovely mare with unusually high hock and knee action for a thoroughbred and we are just so thrilled to have her join the BHM broodmare band.

Another mare to join the BHM/Natalie Blundell team is Montora Flash. Flash is a 16hh grey Warmblood who was bred by Natalie. As a young mare, Flash was a successful eventer however did not compete much after Nat sold her. Recently Flash was offered to us as a broodmare and we jumped at the opportunity. Flash is now in foal to Galero and is due in September 2011.

Dominante

2010 also saw the return of Elegance, Odyssey and San Miranda Valencea. After successful negotiations with their owners these mares are now here stay. They are all in foal to Galero. Valencea's black Galero filly also joins the BHM team. Unfortunately an injury as a foal means she will only be used as a broodmare.

Frozen Semen

I have purchased frozen semen for Habanero XLI to use this coming breeding season. At this stage I will use the semen with Valencea's filly.

I am also in negotiating with Dick Nickerson from Snowy Peaks Ranch, America to import frozen semen from Dominante, a bay Qualified Gran Prix PRE stallion. This semen will be available for all Australian and New Zealand breeders and I will be the representing agent, so if you are interested in purchasing some, just email me at BHM. This is very exciting news for Australia as Dominate is a proven open company winning dressage sire with award winning progeny.

Pro-Fit Foal Rugs

It is not often that I will endorse a product however Pro-Fit Foal rugs are now fully recommended by Black Horse Manor. I purchased a full range of sizes that I used this foaling season and was extremely impressed with the fit, wear and ease of these rugs. All BHM foals are rugged and handled extensively for at least the first week after foaling and I just love the way these rugs fit the foals. I have tried several top brand foal rugs but Pro-Fit Foal Rugs are by far the superior product. For further information go to www.pro-fitrugs.com.au or contact me if you have any questions.

SOLD HORSES

BHM Black Silhouette

Painted By Chance

Above: Painted By Chance

Susanne Nelson from SA is the happy new owner of BHM Black Silhouette. Susanne has named her 'Zulu' which suits her greatly as currently she is a very tall, lean rising yearling. Zulu is destined for the dressage arena and we look forward to Susanne keeping us updated with her future progress.

Painted By Chance

Chance Jrn was purchased by the owner of his sire as a riding prospect. We are thrilled that Chance Jrn is going to a home that will use him for what he was bred for.

BHM Black Coco

We happily welcome Lauren Cram to the BHM team with the purchase of BHM Black Coco.

PRE Mundial Evaluation Tour

This is a fabulous idea and one that PREAA should seriously consider doing. I was very close to not participating as I picked up a bug at the NSW Championships that literally left me bedridden for a week. As a result I was really unprepared and still very sick when the evaluation took place and my horses did not move very well. Still it was a great experience and I will definitely participate next year. Our results are as follows:

BHM Silver Diamontina - Awarded Elite Status
BHM Blacks Instyle - Awarded Premium Status and Reserve Champion
BHM Black Porscha - Awarded Premium Status

Thalaba Bolero

Thalaba Bolero

What a great ambassador for the Partbred Andalusian and Pinto this young boy is! Having competed successfully at the NSW Championships Kerry and Brett took him straight over to Castle Hill Spring Show and won Reserve Champion Pinto Colt/Stallion and 1st Best marked. A few weeks later Bolaro won Champion Led Pinto Colt over 15hh at the NSW Pinto Championships and of course he is now a National Champion. To top his career off, Bolero won at the 2011 Royal Sydney Easter Show! Since he has commenced his show career Bolero has won either Champion or Reserve at every outing. Bolero is by Galero out of a gorgeous Pinto mare named Waverly Pastel. As he is a broken colour Bolero cannot be registered as a 1x Andalusian but is registered as an Iberian Derivative (ID). I cannot wait for this boy to be old enough to go under saddle!

Zulu is registered AHAA and AWHA. Susanne showed Zulu at the Morphett Vale Riding Club Autumn Breeds and Open Encourage Show on 26th March. This was Zulu's first show and we are so proud of her! Zulu is a yearling filly that will mature well over 16hh so has a lot of growing and filling out to do. Her results are fantastic and she was against horses a lot older than her! Zulu's next show is the Warmblood Gala Day in May. Stop Press! At the Warmblood Gala Day Zulu won 1st Yearling Female Warmblood and 1st Yearling Female Open Breed!

Warmblood Classes:

  • 3rd - Best Presented Horse & Handler
  • 2nd - Filly 3 Years & Under

Andalusian Classes:

  • 3rd - Best Presented - Led
  • 1st - Best Handler - Led
  • 2nd - Led Partbred/ID/Australian Female

Del Rio Stud

Col's Horses

Above: Col's Horses

For years I have envied Col for living on the Tumut River. However with the recent rains all his property except his house has been flooded. Sandbags around the house prevented any water from entering but with more rain predicted and the Blowering Dam at 100% capacity, Col has decided to leave the sandbags where they are. This is not a very pretty look but I guess prevention it better than cure!

Col's Horses

All Col's horses are going great guns and this year's cop of foals are impressive. Col was lucky enough to have 2 fillies from his imported Mr Boomsmal To You semen and his Hank Man Leo mare produced an awesome black filly by Pep. He will need to keep an eye on this filly otherwise she may end up at BHM!

On the Home Front

Jamie and Matt
Above: Jamie and Matt

All is well on the home front and I have now recovered from a broken toe. Jamie spent 7 weeks traveling Europe and reluctantly is back at work. She now has the travel bug and already is planning her next trip. Ironically she tripped over whilst in Rome and broke 2 toes. Luckily it was on the last day of her trip so returned home hobbling. What a great pair we were – both with broken toes!

Matt has completed his training at the Australian Federal Police Academy and graduated on the 15 April. His six months of hard training is paying off and we are so excited for him. His is finally fulfilling a life long dream.

I am looking forward to attend the PRE Mundial Seminar in June and maybe sometime during winter also taking some time out just to stay home and do nothing. So until the next newsletter, I hope everyone stays well!
