Welcome to the first edition of the Black Horse Manor Pure Spanish Horse Stud Newsletter!

Well 2006 has seen a busy first half of the year and the second half promises to be even busier and more exciting. My aim is to provide regular updates on stud activities so keep an eye out for future editions

2005/06 Breeding Season Summary
BHM Black Porscha

Our breeding season finished later than normal this year due to the timing of the Spanish Revision, which was in November 2005. This meant that we could not begin to breed our Purebred horses until they had been presented to the Spanish Revision Team and approved for breeding. At this revision Galero, Simanda Park Gabriela and Caballeriza Marieta were presented and passed, and our babies, BHM Chocolate, BHM Black Elegancia and BHM Black Wolf were inscribed.

As a result, serving did not commence until mid November and with several outside mares arriving shortly thereafter, the last mare did not go home until February. This proved to be a tight frame time as this only left Natalie Blundell four weeks to have Galero ready for his dressage test at the 2006 EQUIPRE Show. All mares tested positive and we now eagerly await Galero’s first foals.

Manuka Diestro

Mark and Bridget Heir of Rhyndarra Pure Spanish Horse Stud are now the proud owners of Manuka Diestro. Diestro has 4 foals due this season and we wish Mark and Bridget all the best. I have retained some breedings to Diestro and may use them in the 06/07 season. Although 25 years old, Diestro is still extremely fertile and producing exceptional foals. He will be sadly missed by BHM. His bloodlines will be retained via his daughter BHM Black Elegancia and son, BHM Chocolate.

Galero XIV (Imp)

This season we eagerly await Galero’s first crop of babies. We had the pleasure of having some exceptional outside mares come to Galero so we are expecting some fabulous foals. His first baby is due in early October to Lady Zavata (TB).

Galero’s official retirement was announced at EQUIPRE 06 due to the injuries he received as a youngster. Galero has a fracture of the P2 just above the coffin joint in his nearside front and a severed extensor tendon in the nearside hind. These injuries have now rendered Galero unsound. It is a testament to Galero willingness to work and his fortitude that we were able to get him to Novice level Dressage as the initial veterinary prognosis was that Galero would never have an athletic career.

In early July, Galero was sent to the Goulburn Valley Equine Centre, Shepparton where his semen was successfully frozen.

Kenia-FC (Imp)

On 27 February 2006, our lovely Spanish lady gave birth to a healthy filly foal – BHM Black Porscha. Porscha was born a stunning blue-black colour with a striking white blaze however it looks like she will eventually grey out. We are so thrilled with Porscha, so watch out for her in the show ring! Kenia will be covered by Galero this breeding season.

The auction organised by www.andalusiansforsale.com.au in March 2006 saw 3 of BHM horses sold. All 3 horses were sold to loving homes and we congratulate the following buyers on their purchases:

  • Ariel and Belinda Gallo – BHM Black Wolf
  • José and Faye Mendez – BHM Jett
  • Barbara Davies – BHM Black Rose

In May, Cheryl Elphick of Southern Cross Spanish Horse Stud, Queensland purchased the black P.R.E mare Simanda Park Gabriela in foal to Galero XIV (Imp). The decision to sell ‘Gabby” was based on the fact that BHM Black Porscha was born and will be retained by us as a future brood mare and the ongoing drought. This was an excellent purchase for Southern Cross as Galero XIV is now only available by AI to outside mares. This makes the foal one of only a handful of Galero’s purebred foals eligible for Spanish inscription and revision. This foal is almost guaranteed to be black and is due in October. It will be Galero’s first purebred foal.

2006/07 Breeding Season

Galero XIV is currently the only stallion standing at BHM. He is available to outside mares by AI – chilled semen only.

The following stud owned mares will be covered by Galero this season and expressions of interest for these foals are welcomed. The list may change as the season progresses.

Pure Spanish (P.R.E)
Kenia-FC (Imp) x Galero XIV
Caballeriza Marieta x Galero XIV (filly not for sale).

Stud Book Thoroughbreds
Springdale Missy x Galero (not for sale).

Cutting Bred Quarter Horses
3 mares – names supplied shortly. Colts/geldings only for sale.

Other Breeds
WP Whattabusybody - Colt/gelding only for sale.

Already we have several bookings for outside mares. Once again the mares are exceptional and we are thrilled with the quality of the mares Galero is attracting.

Shows

Over the last couple of years BHM has not concentrated on showing or competing heavily due to other competing priorities. However our plan for future competitions has been formulated and we are aiming to attend all the major P.R.E and Andalusian show.

On the Home Front
Col and Peppa Duke (Imp)

My partner, Colin Morris, owns a well-known QH Cutting Stud at Tumut, NSW called Del Rio. Col has bred cutting futurity winners in the past and is busily preparing some of his youngsters to go to Graham Amos to commence their futurity training. His stallion is Peppa Duke (Imp) a Duel Pep son out of a Doc Olena mare (oh boy I am starting to sound like a QH person!) and is a well-performed horse. ‘Pep’s” first crops of foals are just coming of age for competition so Col is hopeful for another futurity winner.

This season I will be covering 3 of Col’s cutting bred mares to Galero and any resulting fillies will be kept to go back to Peppa Duke. We will continue to breed fillies of this line back to cutting stallions and see what influence the infusion of Spanish blood has had on these horses; particularly a foundation Spanish horse that is as flexible, athletic and trainable as Galero. Perhaps this Spanish blood may give them the ‘cutting edge” if you will excuse the pun!

Jamie has recovered well from her shoulder reconstruction and recently has been able to start riding again. Her Spanish gelding, Ronardo, has returned home and as the days get longer, Jamie will be able to ride more frequently.

One more subject to go and I have finished my Degree (BA of Science majoring in Equine Studies). It has been a long haul but very well worth it and I recommend anyone contemplating a career in horses to undertake the course. As a refresher for the upcoming breeding season both Col and I attended the Goulburn Valley Equine Centres’ Advance Equine Reproduction Short course held in August. This was a fabulous course and we thoroughly recommend it. The speakers, Angus McKinnon, Jim Vassey and other vets from the centre proved to be excellent speakers.

Future Plans

I am currently making inquiries with studs in America to import semen from ‘Qualified/Calicificardo’ Pure Spanish stallions for the 2007/08 breeding season. Currently there is only one qualified stallion in America however several others have indicated that they will be presenting their horses when it is offered to America next year. I intend to travel to America, hopefully early 2007, with the intention of seeing these horses in the flesh and choosing suitable stallions for my breeding program. Why America when I have imported from Spain in the past? Ease of communication, cost and further advanced AI technology are just some of the reasons.

I hope to have another newsletter published in December so until then….. enjoy!!!!!!
